Speech
The Nerthus Commander-In-Chief, Pak'Igov, marched into an underground hall. Three Nerthlings followed: the brown-skinned Captain of the Nerthus Royal SpaceforceâPak'Tyrone, the olive-skinned Captain of the Nerthus Royal NavyâPak'Luca, and the ivory-skinned Colonel of the Nerthus Territorial ArmyâPak'Connor.
Igov's chest felt light as he gestured with an open hand to eight hundred clones of the newly mutated and cybernetically fitted Sonja. "We have another hundred halls filled with these fighter clones."
Pak'Luca stuttered, "I watched footage of her training and her fight in the desert. Very impressive. Surely she won't go out to war naked, next time?"
Igov and his two tight-lipped men broke down into sniggers, while the only womanâPak'Connorâremained tense.
"No. She won't be naked," Igov said. "Scientists are developing a covering which won't interfere with her accessories."
"Did your scientists succeed in creating the cephalo-skin?" Pak'Luca asked.
Igov rubbed a wrinkled brow. "Unfortunately not. Her mutant subjects became dehydrated too quickly. Inserting cephalopod DNA had other drawbacks too. My team of scientists are presently manufacturing camouflage and invisibility nanomaterials into the clones' bodysuits."
Pak'Luca raised a thick black eyebrow. "Yet the soldiers will detect one another despite invisibility?"
"They have ultraviolet vision, infrared vision, telepathy chips, and extra sensors."
They nodded.
"And the man?" asked Pak'Luca.
"The cyborg-mutant, Vaughn, you mean?"
"Yes, Vaughn."
"He has much of the same augmentations, though his sound cannons and laser cannons have yet to be inserted into his palms and soles."
"Do these women cyborgs have them?" Pak'Tyrone asked.
"Only a few, so far. But the whole lot will be fitted with them by the end of the week."
The Space Force Captain formed a double chin and cleared his throat. "What a pity those could not be strung into their DNA."
"They have a lot in their DNAâvenom, extrasensory vision without the computers, and so on, but what species in Plan8 creates canons?"
"True."
"Would you like to see the male cyborg-mutants?"
"Yes," Pak'Connor said.
Igov gestured with an opened hand to another doorway. "Step this way."
A hall, twice the size as the previous stretched out in four corners. Occupying two-thousand Biluglass beds, lay Vaughn's clones.
"Excellent." Pak'Tyrone clapped. "But he also is a Mayleedian."
Igov nodded. "Both are. Any rebels will believe the Mayleedians are attacking."
"And these cyborgs can fly spaceships?" Tyrone asked.
"They're training now. Their intelligence exceeds the best computers. Hacking into systems and predicting the futureâvia scientific analysisâwill make them the best commanders."
"So, they'll be taking our jobs?" Pak' Connorâs usually calm face stiffened with her posture.
Igov plastered on a fake smile. "You'll remain the faces of the Nerthling Military."
"I mean what I ask, though. Will we be taking orders from these clones?"
"No, no. You'll be taking orders from me. Everyone will." He gave a small, tight smile. Frederica gave them their commands, but he'd soon change that. Once she got her claim to fame and he was in control, he'd dispose of her quietly.
She was a bad influence on his daughter. Suzy needed a man to share her bed with, not a woman. If she messed around with Frederica for too long, her body clock would soon surpass fertility.
"I hope you don't mind me saying, Commander-In-Chief.
